If a "lapis" bracelet is cheap, dark, and has no gold in it at all, you are probably holding sodalite. That is not a disaster, since sodalite is a fine stone, but it is not lapis.

The stone had to travel the whole way from Afghanistan by caravan to reach the Nile, which is part of why only royalty wore it.
Then Europe found a new use. From the late Middle Ages, lapis was ground and washed into ultramarine, the pigment whose name means "beyond the sea," and it became the most expensive blue a painter could buy, at times valued as highly as gold. Briefly, yes. A quick rinse under cool water to remove dust will not hurt lapis lazuli. A long soak will: the calcite can dull, the pyrite can tarnish, and any dye on a low-grade piece can bleed. Never leave it in water overnight, never use salt water, and never put it in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.
How to Tell if Lapis Lazuli Is Real
Real lapis lazuli is faked more than almost any other stone, because good Afghan lapis is expensive and blue is easy to dye. The common imitations are dyed howlite and dyed jasper (sold as "Swiss lapis" or "German lapis"), sodalite sold under the wrong name, reconstituted lapis made from powder and resin, and plain glass. Five checks:
- Look for gold, not silver. Real lapis has brassy gold pyrite flecks. Fakes often have no metallic flecks at all, or silver-looking specks painted on.
- Look at the white. Natural calcite shows as soft patches and veins with blurred edges. Dye pools into cracks and leaves hard-edged dark lines.
- Swab it with acetone. A cotton swab with nail polish remover on the back of the stone will lift blue from a dyed piece and nothing from real lapis.
- Check the color. Real lapis is a deep, slightly uneven blue. A uniform, electric, almost purple blue is a sign of dye.
- Feel the weight and temperature. Lapis is dense and cool. Glass and resin warm quickly in the hand and feel light.
Reconstituted lapis is the hardest to catch by eye because it uses real lapis powder. It tends to look too even, with pyrite scattered like glitter rather than growing in patches. Price is the last clue: a large, flawless, uniformly blue piece sold for a few dollars is not what it says it is.
