What Each Planetary Hour Is Good For

Each hour carries the energy of its planet, the same way each day of the week does. These are the most common uses in traditional magic.

Sunrise and sunset are calculated for the place shown with Astronomy Engine. Town search uses Open-Meteo, and nothing you enter is stored except your last town, which stays in your own browser. Planetary hours are not 60 minutes long: the time from sunrise to sunset is split into 12 equal day hours, and sunset to the next sunrise into 12 night hours, so the hours are longer in summer days and winter nights. The planetary day starts at sunrise, not midnight, so the hours before dawn still belong to the day before.

      What Are Planetary Hours?

Planetary hours are the 24 parts of each day and night, each ruled by one of the seven classical planets: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury and the Moon. The system comes from Hellenistic astrology and may have older Babylonian roots, and it is where the English names of the days of the week come from.

Practitioners use planetary hours to time spells, rituals and everyday tasks to the planet that suits them, such as a money spell in a Jupiter hour or a love spell in a Venus hour. Grimoires such as the Key of Solomon give detailed instructions for working in the right planetary hour.

      How Planetary Hours Are Calculated

Planetary hours are calculated from sunrise and sunset where you are, which is why they change with your town and the time of year.

      1. The time from sunrise to sunset is split into 12 equal day hours.
      2. The time from sunset to the next sunrise is split into 12 equal night hours.
      3. The first hour after sunrise belongs to the planet that rules that day: the ☉︎ Sun on Sunday, the ☽︎ Moon on Monday, ♂︎ Mars on Tuesday, ☿︎ Mercury on Wednesday, ♃︎ Jupiter on Thursday, ♀︎ Venus on Friday and ♄︎ Saturn on Saturday.
      4. Each hour after that moves to the next planet in the Chaldean order, from slowest to fastest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, and then back to Saturn.

Because 24 hours leave three planets over after the seven-planet cycle, the first hour of the next day lands on the next day's ruler, which is how the order of the weekdays came about. In summer the day hours are longer than 60 minutes and the night hours are shorter; in winter it is the other way around.

      How to Use Planetary Hours

The simplest way to use planetary hours is to match the planet to what you are doing, and for extra strength, to pick the planet's hour on the planet's own day. Our guide to the magical days of the week covers the day rulers in detail.

      • Money and growth: a ♃︎ Jupiter hour, ideally on a Thursday. See when to cast money spells.
      • Love, beauty and friendship: a ♀︎ Venus hour, ideally on a Friday.
      • Courage and protection: a ♂︎ Mars hour, ideally on a Tuesday.
      • Communication, study and travel: a ☿︎ Mercury hour, ideally on a Wednesday.
      • Success and confidence: a ☉︎ Sun hour, ideally on a Sunday.
      • Home, dreams and divination: a ☽︎ Moon hour, ideally on a Monday.

      Planetary Hours FAQ

What planetary hour is it right now?

The calculator at the top of this page shows the planetary hour right now for your town, how many minutes are left in it, and which planet comes next.

Why aren't planetary hours 60 minutes long?

Planetary hours divide daylight and darkness into 12 parts each, so their length follows the season. Day hours are longer than 60 minutes in summer and shorter in winter, and night hours do the opposite.

When does the planetary day start?

The planetary day starts at sunrise, not midnight. The hours between midnight and sunrise still belong to the previous day's ruler.

      What is the Chaldean order?

The Chaldean order is the traditional sequence of the seven classical planets from slowest to fastest as seen from Earth: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury and the Moon. Planetary hours follow this order.

Which planetary hour is best for money spells?

A Jupiter hour is the traditional choice for money, luck and growth, especially on a Thursday, which is Jupiter's day.

Which planetary hour is best for love spells?

A Venus hour is the traditional choice for love, beauty and friendship, especially on a Friday, which is Venus's day.

Are planetary hours the same everywhere?

No. Planetary hours depend on sunrise and sunset where you are, so they start at different times in different towns, even in the same time zone.

Do I have to start at the exact minute?

No. Anything you begin within the hour falls under that hour's planet, so there is no need to wait for the first minute.
