Return to Sender Spell: How to Send Negativity Back Where It Came From

by Aurora Moone | Oct 3, 2026 | Rituals & Sacred Practices

A return to sender spell sends harm, ill will, or a jinx back to the person who sent it. It doesn't add a curse of your own. It works like a mirror: whatever comes at you turns around and goes home. Many practitioners turn to it when a run of bad luck feels aimed, when someone's envy feels heavy, or when they simply want their protection to push back instead of only blocking.

What Is a Return to Sender Spell?

A return to sender spell is a reversal spell: protection that reflects what was sent instead of absorbing it. A shield stops harm at the door. A return to sender spell sends it back down the path it came from.

The idea turns up in many places. In hoodoo, illness believed to come from conjure was traditionally answered by reversing the work and returning it to the person who laid it. The candles, oils, and powders sold as "reversing" or "reversible" come from that rootwork shelf. In England, the 17th-century witch bottle was filled with pins and nails and set by the fire so the witch would feel the trouble she had caused. Mirrors and other shiny objects have long been used to deflect the evil eye, and the flat bagua mirror of feng shui hangs over doorways to reflect harmful energy away from the house.

Do You Need to Know Who Sent It?

No, you don't need a name to do a return to sender spell. The words below say "whoever sent this," and the work finds its own way home. If you do know the source, you can write the name on the paper or carve it into the candle. Many practitioners prefer to leave it open even when they suspect someone, because a guess can be wrong.

When to Do a Return to Sender Spell

The waning moon is the traditional time for a return to sender spell, because it's the phase for sending things away. Saturday (Saturn's day, for boundaries and endings) and Tuesday (Mars's day, for defense) are the usual days. The magical days of the week and our moon calendar have the details. If something feels urgent, you can do it on any day.

What You Need for a Return to Sender Spell

The classic return to sender spell uses a reversing candle, a small mirror, and a dressing oil. Here is the full list for the candle spell below:

  • A reversing candle. This is a candle with a black layer over red. Our reversible pillar candle is about nine inches tall, black over red. A plain black candle also works.
  • A metal or ceramic candle holder that fits the candle.
  • A small mirror, about the size of a saucer or larger, laid face up. A craft mirror tile with smooth edges is ideal.
  • A dressing oil. Reversible oil is the traditional choice, and plain olive oil works too.
  • A slip of plain paper and a pen.
  • A pinch of black salt, if you have it.
  • Matches or a lighter, and a fire-safe surface with nothing hanging above it.

Optional additions are a piece of black obsidian (the volcanic glass practitioners keep for turning ill intent back) and a pin or toothpick for carving the candle.

How to Do a Return to Sender Spell With a Candle

This simple return to sender spell takes about 20 minutes to set up and runs as long as the candle burns. It's the method most practitioners start with.

  1. Cleanse your space first. Open a window and smoke-cleanse the room, sweep, or wipe the surface where you'll work with a little Florida water.
  2. Write the paper. Write "Whoever sent this, I return it to you" or the name, if you know it. Fold the paper away from you once.
  3. Carve the candle, if you like. Use a pin or toothpick to carve "return" or the sender's name into the side of the candle, from the wick down toward the base.
  4. Dress the candle. Rub a thin coat of oil on the candle from the wick down to the base, moving away from you. Keep oil off the wick, and wipe away any extra, because an oil-soaked candle can flare.
  5. Set it up. Lay the mirror face up, put the folded paper on the mirror, and stand the candle in its holder on top of the paper. The holder keeps hot wax and flame off the glass, because mirrors can crack from heat. Sprinkle a thin ring of black salt around the holder.
  6. Light the candle and say the words. Use the words in the next section, out loud or under your breath.
  7. Let it burn. Never leave a burning candle unattended. If you need to leave or sleep, snuff it with a snuffer or a lid (don't blow it out) and relight it with the same words when you're back.

When the candle has burned down, gather the wax, the paper, and the salt and take them away from your home. Many practitioners leave them at a crossroads or drop them in a public trash bin, so the work leaves with them. Clean the mirror with salt water before you use it again.

Return to Sender Spell Words

The words of a return to sender spell name what you're returning and ask that it go back unchanged. Here is a set you can say over the candle, the mirror box, or the salt line:

What you sent to me, I send to you,
Back along the path it traveled through.
Not one ounce more, not one ounce less,
Find the one who caused this distress.
By mirror, flame, and salt I say:
It cannot stay. Now go your way.

"Not one ounce more" is the line that keeps the spell a return and not a curse. Some practitioners add the name of a deity, saint, or ancestor they work with. Others repeat the words three times, once for each of the three nights of a waning moon. If you work with the Psalms, Psalm 7 is a traditional choice. Its verse 16 says the wrongdoer's mischief returns upon his own head. Change the words until they sound like you.

Other Ways to Do a Return to Sender Spell

You can also do a return to sender spell without a flame. These three versions work well in apartments, dorms, or any home where open flame isn't practical.

Mirror Box Return to Sender Spell

A mirror box is a small box lined with mirrors, so whatever goes inside sees only its own reflection. Line the inside of a small cardboard or wooden box with craft mirror tiles, mirror-side in. Smooth-edged tiles are safe to handle. Never use broken mirror pieces. Put in your folded paper, close the lid, and tie it shut with black string or thread. Say the words over it, then keep the box somewhere out of the way, such as a high shelf or the back of a closet, until things feel settled. When you're done, take the paper out, tear it up, and throw it away from your home.

Black Salt Threshold Line

A black salt line at the door sends back anything aimed at the house before it crosses in. Sprinkle a thin line of black salt or reversible sachet powder across the outside of your front door and say the words. Sweep it outward after three days, from the threshold toward the street. Keep it where pets and small children can't reach it, and skip the cayenne version of black salt anywhere people walk barefoot.

Reversing Floor Wash

A reversing floor wash clears the house and turns harm back toward its source. Mix reversible ritual wash into a bucket of water at the strength the label gives. Wash or mop from the back of the house toward the front door, then pour the leftover water out the front door or down an outside drain. Rinse hard floors that pets walk on with plain water afterward.

What to Do After a Return to Sender Spell

After a return to sender spell, close the work with cleansing and protection, so the space it leaves stays clear. A spiritual bath the same night or the next morning is the traditional finish. Then put a lasting protection in place, such as a protection symbol over the door or a protection stone by the entrance.

Many practitioners watch the candle as it burns. A steady flame and a clean burn are usually read as a smooth return. Heavy black smoke or soot on the holder is often read as a sign of a lot to send back, and some people repeat the spell on the next waning moon if that happens. If what you're dealing with feels like the evil eye in particular, an egg cleanse pairs well with this spell.

Is a Return to Sender Spell Ethical?

Most practitioners consider a return to sender spell ethical, because it sends back only what was sent and adds nothing new. That's the difference between it and a hex. People who follow the Wiccan Rule of Three, sometimes called the Law of Return, often describe this spell as that same law working on someone else's behalf: the harm goes back to the person who put it out.

If you'd rather not touch the other person's path at all, a banishing spell moves someone out of your life without sending anything back, and the cord cutting meditation releases a tie without any return.

If someone is threatening or harassing you in everyday life, a spell works best alongside practical steps. Keep a record of what happens and reach out to people who can help.

A Note on Living Traditions

Reversing work has deep roots in hoodoo, an African American folk tradition born in the American South, and in other living folk practices. The simple methods here are widely shared folk magic. If hoodoo rootwork is calling you, its fuller practice is best learned from practitioners within the tradition.

Return to Sender Spell FAQ

What is a return to sender spell?

A return to sender spell is a protection spell that sends harm, ill will, or a jinx back to whoever sent it. It reflects what was sent like a mirror and adds no curse of its own.

What are the words for a return to sender spell?

A simple rhyming set of return to sender spell words is "What you sent to me, I send to you, back along the path it traveled through. Not one ounce more, not one ounce less, find the one who caused this distress." You can say them over a candle, a mirror box, or a salt line, and change them to fit your own voice.

Is there a return to sender spell prayer?

Yes. Many practitioners use spoken words in place of a formal prayer, and those who work with the Psalms often choose Psalm 7. Its verse 16 says the wrongdoer's mischief returns upon his own head. You can also ask a deity, saint, or ancestor you already work with to carry the harm back.

What is the simplest return to sender spell?

The simplest return to sender spell is a black or reversing candle in a holder on a mirror, lit while you say the return words. If you can't burn a candle, a small box lined with mirror tiles works without flame.

What makes a return to sender spell powerful?

Many practitioners feel a return to sender spell carries the most force when the intention is clear, the space is cleansed first, and the work is timed to a waning moon. Following through with a spiritual bath and lasting protection afterward helps keep the space clear.

Do I need to know who cursed me?

No. You can write "whoever sent this" instead of a name, and the work returns to its source either way. Leaving the name open also guards against blaming the wrong person.

What is the difference between a reversal spell and a return to sender spell?

The two terms are used for the same kind of work. "Reversing" and "reversible" are the older names on hoodoo candles, oils, and powders, and "return to sender" is the more common modern phrase.

Will a return to sender spell backfire?

Most practitioners believe a return to sender spell doesn't backfire, because it sends back only what was sent and adds nothing of your own. Closing the work with a cleansing bath and a protection charm helps keep anything from lingering.
