What Is Moonstone?

Moonstone is a feldspar, the most common mineral group in the earth's crust, in a form that grew as two feldspars at once. As the crystal cooled, potassium feldspar (orthoclase) and sodium feldspar (albite) separated into thin alternating layers inside a single stone, and those layers are the whole secret of the glow. Light entering the stone scatters between them, and the scattered light drifts across the surface as a sheen that moves when the stone moves, an effect called adularescence after Mount Adular in the Swiss Alps, where fine moonstone was first described. Thin albite layers scatter blue; thicker ones scatter white. That is why the rarest and costliest moonstone is the transparent kind with a pure blue float, and why most tumbled stones glow white or silver.

Moonstone is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, a little softer than quartz, and it has two directions of perfect cleavage, which means it breaks cleanly along flat planes when it is struck, the way mica peels. That one fact runs through everything below: moonstone rings chip, moonstone beads crack when dropped on tile, and a moonstone that survives years in a pocket is a well-loved one. Its body color runs from colorless and white through gray, peach, brown, and green, and a good stone often shows fine internal cracks in a pattern that cutters call centipedes, one of the marks of the real thing.

Where Moonstone Is Found

Sri Lanka is the classic source and still the leading one, and the blue-sheen moonstone of its southern mines is the standard every other stone is measured against. India produces most of the moonstone in the crystal trade, in white, peach, gray, and green, and it is the source of the labradorite sold as rainbow moonstone. Myanmar produced the finest transparent blue stones historically, and Madagascar, Brazil, Tanzania, Norway, Poland, Armenia, Australia, Mexico, and the United States all have deposits. Switzerland's Adular mountains gave the mineral its old name, adularia. One place that does not have moonstone is Florida, which made it the state gemstone in 1970 anyway, to honor the Moon landings that left from Kennedy Space Center.

Moonstone Colors and Varieties: White, Blue, Peach, Gray, Black, Green, and Rainbow

What color is moonstone? Colorless to white with a blue or white sheen is the classic, and the rest are body colors from traces of iron and other elements, plus a few trade names that are not moonstone at all:

Peach and black moonstone are the two searched most after rainbow, and both are real stones with real lore; only opalite and dyed pink are the ones to watch.

Rainbow Moonstone Is Labradorite

Rainbow moonstone is the most popular "moonstone" in any crystal shop, and it is labradorite: a white to clear plagioclase feldspar, mostly from India and Madagascar, that flashes electric blue and sometimes gold and violet from a different optical trick, thin twinning layers rather than the exsolved layers of true moonstone. Gemologists have called it labradorite for decades and the trade has called it rainbow moonstone for just as long, so the name is not going anywhere. In practice the two stones are used side by side and sometimes interchangeably, and the lore of rainbow moonstone borrows from both: moonstone's intuition and new beginnings, labradorite's shielding and magic. Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem and Metal Magic lists moonstone as receptive, ruled by the Moon, of the element Water, with the powers of love, divination, psychic awareness, sleep, gardening, protection, youth, and dieting, and he gives it to travelers, to gardeners who plant by the moon, and to anyone who wants gentler dreams. Judy Hall's The Crystal Bible calls it "a stone of new beginnings," strongly connected to the moon and to intuition, a stone that calms emotional overreaction and soothes stress, that is traditionally worn for protection on journeys, especially by night and by sea, and that she places by the bed against nightmares. Both say the same thing about its cycle: the stone is strongest at the full moon and gentlest at the new.

The history is long and lunar. The Romans believed moonstone was solidified moonlight and that its glow waxed and waned with the moon, and they gave it to Diana, the Greeks to Selene and to Artemis. In India it is sacred, a stone of the moon god Chandra, traditionally sold on a yellow cloth because yellow is the moon's sacred color there, and given as a wedding stone for harmony. The Art Nouveau jewelers made it their favorite gem: René Lalique set moonstone into dragonflies and nymphs, and the stone's soft glow is the look of the whole Art Nouveau movement. It is one of the three modern June birthstones, and in 1970 Florida named it the state gem for the astronauts, without a single moonstone in Florida's ground.

Take it off if it disturbs your sleep; a few people find it does the opposite of what the books promise.

How to Use Moonstone

The best moonstone uses follow the moon:

A moonstone ring puts intuition and new beginnings where you see it, and moonstone engagement rings have had a following since the Art Nouveau years, when Lalique and his contemporaries set the stone in gold with enamel and pearl. Moonstone cleaves and is softer than quartz, so a ring for daily wear needs a protective bezel rather than prongs, a stone that sits low, and a habit of taking it off for dishes, gardening, and the gym. For occasional wear it is fine and beautiful. How to Cleanse and Charge Moonstone

Moonstone asks for the moon and a little care about water:

• Moonlight. The charge, obviously: on the sill through the full moon, every month if you can. The tradition says it is at its strongest then.
• Selenite. Overnight on a selenite slab; the pairing of the two moon-named stones.
• Smoke or sound. Both fine, and the everyday choice.
• Running water. A quick rinse and dry is fine. Do not soak it: water works into the cleavage cracks and can dull or split it.
• Earth. Buried overnight in dry soil.
• Sunlight. Short exposure is fine and the stone does not fade, but the lore keeps it out of the sun as the moon's stone, and long heat can stress the cracks.
• Salt. Skip it; dry salt scratches the polish and salt water gets into the cleavage.

Can Moonstone Go in Water?

Briefly. A rinse under the tap and a dry with a cloth will not hurt polished moonstone, and a tumbled stone dropped into moon water for a night usually survives. Do not leave it soaking, do not bathe with it, and never take it from hot water to cold, because moonstone's cleavage planes and centipede cracks let water in and a temperature shock can split it. Rainbow moonstone, being labradorite, has the same cleavage and the same rule.

How to Tell if Moonstone Is Real

Real moonstone is cheap enough that the fakes are mostly glass sold under other names, and one test settles almost every case:

1. Tilt it. Real moonstone's sheen moves: a band of light floats across the stone and shifts as you turn it, and it is blue or white. Opalite's glow is fixed and even, the same from every angle, milky white with a blue haze.
2. Backlight it. Hold it in front of a lamp. Opalite turns orange or amber with light behind it; moonstone stays white, blue, or peach.
3. Look inside. Real moonstone usually has fine internal cracks, the centipede inclusions, and slight cloudiness; opalite and glass are flawless or have round bubbles.
4. Feel the weight and the cold. Moonstone is cool and of ordinary weight; glass warms fast and plastic is light.
5. Check the flash color. Electric blue and gold flashes on a white stone mean labradorite, sold as rainbow moonstone, which is a real stone under the wrong name rather than a fake.
6. Scratch test as a last resort. Moonstone at 6 to 6.5 will scratch glass faintly and be scratched by a steel file; opalite is glass and scratches more easily.

Cut stones are another world: a fine transparent Sri Lankan or Burmese moonstone with a deep blue float sells by the carat like a precious gem, and a white cabochon with a good sheen costs a few dollars. Moonstone needs gentle handling, more than most stones on this site. At 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale it scratches against quartz, which is in nearly every crystal box, so store it apart in a pouch. Its perfect cleavage means a drop on a hard floor can split a bead or a cabochon cleanly in two; keep bracelets off for sport and housework and wear rings for occasions. Clean it with a soft cloth and, if it needs it, a quick rinse and dry; no ultrasonic cleaners, no steam, no long soaks, no salt. Keep it out of long direct sun and away from heat, which stress the internal cracks. Treated with that care, a moonstone keeps its glow for a lifetime, and the sheen does not fade.
