- Look for bubbles. Glass shows round bubbles and curved swirl lines under a loupe. Quartz shows veils, wisps, tiny rainbow fractures, and sometimes needle inclusions, never round bubbles.
- Look for the striations. A natural point has fine horizontal lines across its six prism faces. A cut point may not, but a polished sphere with no inclusions at all and a low price is glass.
- Feel the temperature. Quartz is cool and stays cool; glass warms in the hand in seconds.
- Scratch test. Quartz scratches glass and a steel knife will not mark it. Glass will not scratch glass cleanly.
- The line test. Set the stone on a printed line: clear calcite shows two lines, quartz shows one. Vinegar makes calcite fizz and does nothing to quartz.
A stone with a few veils and a cloudy base is the reassuring sign; nature does not make quartz perfect, and glass does.
