30daysmagicalroots pagan wiccan challenge

The #30DaysMagicalRoots Challenge

Welcome to the 30 Day Magical Roots Challenge! Over the next 30 days, you will be revisiting your magical roots (or perhaps you are just building your foundation) and going back to some basic practices. This challenge was inspired by Plentiful Earth at www.plentifulearth.com and the weekly #WiccanChat hosted by @Plentiful_Earth on Twitter.

So many of us get stuck in a rut over the years of our magical practice, and this is a fun way to revisit some basics. You can document these daily topics in a variety of ways.

You can post photos on Instagram, post live video or tweets on Twitter, or post your links to the Pinterest Board for this event and come back to it later to review. You don’t even have to post anything about it on social media, though if you do, please use #30daysmagicalroots so we can follow your journey!

This challenge is for you and you alone. Release any sense of judgment or competition, this isn’t a win or lose contest. It’s simply a way to come back to center and have some fun. We can’t wait to share this journey with you.

Written by Nicole + Michelle.

Day 1: Divination

Use your favorite form of divination to ask “What should my focus be for this month?” Reflect on the themes of your divination reading. What answer speaks to you the most?

Day 2: Grounding

Practice grounding today (and every day this challenge)! What is your favorite way to do this? If you have never done this before go to YouTube and do a search for grounding techniques.

Day 3: Centering/Breath-work

Spend 5 minutes today (and every day this challenge) focusing on your breath. Notice your breath as it enters and leaves your body. Try alternating between breathing in through the left nostril and out through the right. Use your fingers to close each nostril if you need the extra assistance. Try to increase this from 5 minutes to more as you do this every day this month.

Day 4: Intentions

Set your intention for this challenge. What do you hope to get out of it? Our intentions are so important when it comes to magic. You must have a clear vision in order to proceed with the action. (Make one or two concrete goals: for example, “I’d like to create a simple daily magical routine for myself” or “I’d like to try three new magical techniques before the end of the month.”)

Day 5: Energy work

Start out rubbing your hands together, and then once they are warm, hold your hands about six inches apart. Push them together and then pull them apart and feel the energy build between your palms. Practice making the space larger and feeling the energy filling the empty space. Do this every day after your breath-work. See how large you can make the energy form. What shapes does it take? How does it feel? Any colors? Sensations? Smells? Make it your own! After you are done, press your hands to your chest and let the energy sink into your heart chakra.

Day 6: Shielding

Practice working with your shields today. Every witch and magical practitioner needs to have strong boundaries and defenses. Make sure yours are strong and ready for whatever life throws your way. If you don’t know how to create personal shields, do some research on the topic today. (Recommended resource: The Witch’s Shield by Christopher Penczak)

Day 7: Yoga pose

Choose one yoga pose to do every day this month. See how you improve over the month. If you need help finding some yoga poses, check these links out: Yoga with Adrienne.

Day 8: Meditation

Write a short meditation to practice on a regular basis. (Bonus if you record an audio version of this and share it!)

Day 9: Daily practices

What are some quick & easy practices you can incorporate into your daily life to help you connect with your Craft and your Gods? You can find some ideas here: Ways to Live a More Magical Life and here: 15 Ways to Do Witchcraft Every Day

Day 10: Herb/Plant/Tree

Choose a plant ally to connect with. Or let one choose you! More information on being chosen by a plant here: 6 Signs a Plant Wants to Make Magic with You.

Day 11: Write a spell (& perform it for bonus points!)

Day 12: Deity

Do you work with deities? Why or why not? Are you a monotheist, dualist, polytheist, animist, etc.? Write a poem or prayer dedicated to a deity and give it to Them as an offering. (Bonus: share a poem or prayer you’ve written for one of your deities.)

Day 13: Stone/Crystal:

Find a stone or crystal to work with. Learn about its energies and/or magical properties and find ways to incorporate it into your life over the next month. (Recommended Resource: Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem & Metal Magic or The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall)

Day 14: Incense

Create an incense recipe to help you focus on your daily practice. Here is an article on making herbal incense from Mother Earth Living (Bonus points if you make it and use it for the rest of the month.)

Day 15: Kitchen Witchery

How can you make your meal a magical one? Discover the magickal correspondences of your ingredients and enchant your meal as you cook it!

Day 16: Connect with Mother Earth

Go outside! Find a tree to sit with for a while. Maybe clean up if there is garbage around it. Let today be a day of service to Mother Earth.

Day 17: Raise some energy

Try chanting, singing, drumming, or dancing! Turn some tunes on and work on that Stevie Nicks spin. When you’re feeling complete throw your arms up and send it shooting out through your hands into the Universe.

Day 18: Elemental magic

Spend some time today working with and acknowledging the elements of your practice. Do you honor the Land/Sea/Sky elements, or the elements of water, fire, air, and earth, or something else? WHY do you work with those elements and what have they brought to your life?

Day 19: Sacred Space/Circle Casting

How do you create sacred space for yourself? Do you cast a circle every time you work a spell? Or do you have a dedicated space that you practice in? Take some time today to settle into that space and enjoy its sacredness.

Day 20: Ethics

What are magical ethics? Write down a core list of ethics for your own practice. No judgement here-this is for you and you alone!

Day 21: Symbols

What symbols do you use in your practice and why? Are there any that you are drawn to? Try carving the symbol into a candle and burning it while you meditate on that sacred symbol. You can also draw it on a piece of paper and carry it with you every day. Or find a piece of jewelry with the symbol to wear when you need a magical boost.

Day 22: Self-Purification

Take a purifying bath (with sea salt for added purification if you like), smudge yourself with sage/rosemary/Palo Santo/, sprinkle with Florida Water/Holy water/Salt water, or hold a purifying stone like selenite. Take some time today to cleanse your auric field, rid yourself of any energetic ick that may be lingering, and see how much better it makes you feel.

Day 23: Book of Shadows/Grimoire

Do you have one? If not, create a sacred journal to document your recipes, spells, practices, invocations. This can be a handwritten journal, printed pages in a binder, or even a file on your computer (though if it’s the latter, always back it up!). Make it as simple or complex as you want it to be–it’s YOURS and should make you happy.

Day 24: Sabbats

What holidays from the wheel of the year do you celebrate? Create your own wheel of the year! You are only limited by your imagination.

Day 25: Esbats

Create a ritual to honor the moon every month. Do you only celebrate the full moon? Try honoring the dark moon this month and see how it changes your practice.

Day 26: Create a sigil

Craft a sigil that represents the path you are on or the path you want to follow. This is a deeply personal creation so put some thought into it.

Day 27: Healing

Focus on some self-care today. What are you doing in your life to bring health and vitality to your physical and emotional body? Do you practice magical healing, or energy healing like reiki? If so, practice some healing magic today! If not, take some time today to learn a little bit about different kinds magical healing.

Day 28: Magical Podcasts

Find a witchy or Pagan podcast online and download one episode. Magic isn’t always stuffy or serious, sometimes you have to enjoy the fun things in life. Relax and enjoy learning something new today.

Day 29: Astrology

Find your moon sign (you will need to know the date and time you were born) and read up on how it influences your life. Here is a good resource for finding out your moon sign: Lunarium.

Day 30: Make a commitment to yourself

What practice are you going to continue past this month? Take a few minutes today to write about your journey over the last 30 days and see how this challenge has affected your spiritual practice. Are there things you want to keep from this challenge? How have your thoughts changed about yourself and your Craft?

I love this! Too bad I found it only today, with 3 days to go 😀
Maybe I can do this late? 🙂
Funnily I have been doing something similar; I have been writing about The Witch of Lupine Hollow: 30 Ways to Live a More Magickal Life Everyday, for August, but not about my personal experience. This sounds like a great thing to do in September. Just move day 24 to day 22 😀

So i started this suuuuuper late! I was traveling for the first half of the month and then eclipse, birthdays, back to school… I’m on day 10 and loving it! I knew I wanted to participate when I saw the instagram post, but I also believe in realistic expectations. 🙂 Here’s to finishing strong!

    • Aurora Moone says:

      Hi Sara!!

Happy Thursday! As a “wise wizard” once said, “A Wizard is never late, nor is he early; He arrives precisely when he means to.” Okay, so it’s Gandalf, but the words are still quite wise: We all start things when we’re meant to in life! You’re right where you need to be!

Welcome back to the challenge! What’s your Instagram handle? I’ll welcome you back with a giant repost!

Much luck with the rest of your challenge, Goddess!
