Every Wiccan knows that there is a standard rule that every Wiccan follows; this rule exists to help guide Wiccans towards white or good magickal practices.
The rede that we know today was originally spoken by the famous Witch Doreen Valiente in 1967 and has since been adapted into longer versions, such as the Rede of the Wiccae by Lady Gwen Thompson.
By definition, the word “rede” comes from a Middle English word meaning “advice” or “counsel”. From this, we can conclude that the Wiccan Rede is a suggestion that one should take seriously.
Due to this, there are many Witches who may identify as Wiccan that don’t necessarily follow the Wiccan Rede.
In Wicca, it is believed that when a Witch makes a shift in the universe, that shift bounces back onto the Witch who caused the shift. In the words of our American idea of Karma, “what goes around comes around.”
Wiccans believe that if you put harm out to the universe, you will receive harm in return.
So, it is up to the individual magical practitioner to decide if the Wiccan Rede affects their individual practices.
In short, the rede is as simple as follows:
Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill, An it harm none do what ye will.
