Spiritual awakening is a deeply personal and often profound experience that can vary greatly from person to person.
However, there are commonly described stages or phases that many people seem to experience on this journey.
Here are thirteen stages often associated with a spiritual awakening:
Defined as an event that kicks rapid change into motion, a catalyst is a large life event that causes your life to feel deeply uncertain and suddenly different.
This is the starting point of spiritual awakening, and, like a catalyst, it is often triggered by a significant life event or a deep, existential questioning.
It’s a moment that shakes the foundation of one’s current understanding or way of life.
For me, it was that not every person likes to see odd occurrences in life.
In this stage, there’s an intense thirst for understanding more about life, spirituality, and the deeper truths of existence.
You may become a little frustrated at this stage because sometimes, it seems like the deeper you dig, the less you uncover.
Keep at it and allow yourself to be open to metaphysical messages.
For me, I wanted to understand why some people could speak to others without words or know when someone was experiencing an emotion that wasn’t externally obvious.
As soon as you begin to open your quest for answers and knowledge, you might start noticing coincidences and synchronicities that seem too purposeful to be mere chance.
These might appear as angel numbers, repeated symbols or events, or a new influx of people who share similar catalysts.
From here, meditate. Accept that your answers may not be found on Earth, but inside, above, and outside of it.
This involves a greater awareness of oneself and the world around.
It’s often accompanied by a sense of interconnectedness with all things.
Now, you’ll start to feel either oddly content, bored, in a rut, stuck, or life will just keep trying to life.
This phase is not our favorite, but it’s one that has to happen in order for you to realize that not everything is as it seems.
This phase is where the old ways of living no longer feel fulfilling, leading to a sense of dissatisfaction or a feeling that something is ‘missing.’
It’s time to go inward and uncover who you are, what your path is, and how your catalyst fits into your personal destiny.
This stage is marked by deep self-examination, questioning personal beliefs, values, and one’s role in the world.
Keep a journal and begin accepting the lessons and growth that you encounter along the way.
Letting go of old patterns, habits, and beliefs that no longer serve your highest good.
This often involves a process of healing old wounds.
I typically call this shadow work, but it can be a daily mantra that helps you move forward in life.
From here, you’ll not only realize that step 7 is massively healing, but you’ll also uncover a deeper sense of empathy for others and a desire to help and heal.
This is the first reward of your spiritual awakening.
In this stage, you begin to integrate your new understanding and insights into your daily life.
Take note of what you’ve done to help others and allow yourself to do the same for you.
Through the practice of Stages 8 and 9, you’ll start experiencing a profound sense of unity with all existence, often described as feeling a part of something much larger than oneself.
Living more authentically in alignment with your true self and purpose will come more naturally now, but continue to be on the lookout for other ways that you can continue to grow into your new energy and spiritual space.
Begin developing regular spiritual practices that support your ongoing growth and awakening.
Recognize that spiritual awakening is not a final destination but an ongoing journey of growth and evolution.
It’s important to remember that these stages are not linear and can overlap or recur in different ways for different individuals.
The journey of spiritual awakening is highly individualized and unique to each person.
