6 Ways Pagans & Wiccans can Celebrate Earth Day

“No matter what group you commit to, no matter what spirituality you align with, no matter what religion you follow, no matter what political party you fall under, and no matter what your gender or race is, we are all citizens of Earth, and we all have a responsibility.” – Aurora Moone

Earth Day, April 22, is a day for everyone to take a moment to recognize the damage being done to our beautiful planet and do at least one thing to educate others about or help reverse our carbon footprint. In 2010, the massive Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill spilled over 130 million gallons of oil into our oceans, poisoning and mutating our precious sea life. That oil spill ejected 4,333% more oil into the Gulf of Mexico than the Santa Barbara Oil Spill of 1969, which was the catalyst for the creation of Earth Day in 1970.

Protecting the Earth comes naturally to us, but isn’t it fun to help in more ways than just planting a tree? Here’s a great list of cool, spiritual things you can do on Earth Day.

6 Ways Pagans, Wiccans, and Earth-Conscious People can Celebrate Earth Day

1. Plant your Personal World Tree

Sure, we all planted a tree for Earth Day in elementary school, but what if we tapped into our spirituality to give back some of our own energy to the Earth? Everyone has a favorite sacred or magickal tree or even a specific type of tree they use in World Tree or Tree of Life meditations. Bring that sacred image into the real world by giving that energy life!

2. Place Protective Energy around a Local Forest

Do you have a favorite outdoor sacred space? Maybe your city is expanding and cutting down numerous trees in your area to make room for “growth”? Visit the spot that you want to protect. Meditate in that area. Commune with the energies, devas, fairies, and gnomes. Promise them that you will donate your love and energy to that space as a blessing. Perform your favorite protection ritual for that space. I like to affirm that if anyone comes to that area with the intention of harm, that they be turned away or that the location becomes invisible to them, for the area’s highest good, harming none.

3. Remotely Visit and Heal Damaged Earth

We have the ability to heal across space and time, so why not use that to help the earth? Find a place on Earth that has experienced severe environmental damage. I plan to visit the Gulf of Mexico and the area around Okuma, Fukushima, Japan that has been affected by radiation. Meditate and travel to that area in your meditation. Perform your favorite type of healing.

4. Hug a Tree

This sounds cliche, but we transfer energy between ourselves and the earth, everyday! Purposeful energy exchange is even stronger and more beneficial than our normal symbiosis! So, hug a tree and share your healing energy with it. Imagine that that energy is traveling through the full tree, through the roots, and to any damaged trees that may need the healing energy.

5. Take Family Walk

Planning to go out to eat? Go somewhere close and walk as a family! This is a perfect time to teach children all about the Earth, how it sustains life, and how it is our responsibility to help! Did we mention that your walk creates less damage to our environment than the emissions from your car and you are using no gas, which normally contributes to the degradation of our environment!

6. Create DIY Seed Bombs with your Children

If you’ve ever made paper from scratch, then you can easily add some seeds to that paper pulp and let the pulp dry in cookie cutters! Bless each seed bomb to promote a healthy Earth or dedicate each seed bomb to your favorite Earth Goddess. This is the perfect time to plant some seeds for the future in your children! Teach them about recycling, biodegradable items, and how our environment is impacted!
